Desenzano del Garda

With its wide territory, Desenzano faces the southern shores of the lake. In spite of the town's widening, the historical center is still developed near the old harbour, surrounded by historical buildings as the Palazzo del Provveditore and the former communal Palace, both dated back to the XVI century. In the high part of the town, there are the ruins of an ancient castle with a quadrangular tower.
The church dedicated to Santa Maria Maddalena is valuable, it was built at the end of the 1400's and restored at the end of the following century. But the heart of Desenzano is still more ancient and it's very close: not far away from the church, in fact, the diggings made in 1921 revealed the ruins of a Roman villa, built between the III and the VI century. Some mosaic pavements have been discovered; probably they indicate the villa was an exclusive dwelling. The name Desenzano, in fact, has roman origin; it is supposed to come from the Latin name Decentius.
